A US startup can work effectively with an India-based SaaS team when product ownership, overlap hours, milestones, acceptance criteria, source-code access, cloud accounts and incident responsibility are agreed before development. Evaluate the operating model, not only the rate
A low estimate is not useful if the founder must rewrite requirements, chase demos or discover that deployment and quality assurance were excluded. Ask who owns product clarification, architecture, development, review, testing and release.
A small founder-led team can be effective when decision paths are clear and workload matches capacity.
What to put in the engagement plan
The plan should make remote delivery observable.

Protect product and infrastructure control
Use company-controlled repositories, cloud accounts, domains and provider accounts when practical. Grant least-privilege access and remove it during offboarding. Do not transmit production customer data when representative test data can be used.
The contract should clarify confidentiality, intellectual-property and governing terms with qualified legal advice.
Start with a paid discovery or bounded milestone
A discovery sprint or one end-to-end milestone tests communication and execution before a large commitment. The output should include architecture, risks, backlog, estimate assumptions and a demonstrable result.
